STUDENT DRESS CODE
The Baltimore County Board of Education has a strong commitment to the learning process. The statement below is an excerpt from the Baltimore County Student Behavior Handbook and explains the policy regarding student dress:
“Student dress and grooming are the responsibility of the student and his/her parents or guardians, unless there is a safety hazard, a hindrance to the educational processes, or a case of obscenity. Health considerations require the wearing of footwear in public buildings.”
Lansdowne Middle School adheres to this commitment, too. In order to provide an excellent learning atmosphere the faculty and staff have planned for a challenging and rewarding academic school year. It is mandatory that student attire and appearance during the day maintain an atmosphere conducive to learning, promote self-discipline and provide for student health and safety.
Students of Lansdowne Middle School are required to groom themselves in a manner that is modest, clean, appropriate decent and not disruptive to the learning process. Students are expected to abide by this dress code from the time they arrive at school until they leave school. The requirements include, but not limited to:
Head Covering:
· Hats, sunglasses, or head coverings of any kind, including bandanas and visors, may not be worn in the school building unless approved for religious or medical reasons. Certain headbands, scrunchies, etc., which are used to hold hair in place and do not cover the entire head are permitted.
Shirts Must:
· Cover the entire back (no cutout backs, no shirts that tie in the back).
· Cover the midriff area (bottom of the shirt must meet the top of the lower attire at all times.)
· Cover undergarments, (i.e., muscle shirts and under armor shirts are considered undergarments, and must have a shirt over them.)
· Not be see-through.
· Fit modestly, so that all cleavage area is covered (no low cut neckline as to expose any of the breasts).
· Have two straps, one on each shoulder (no tube tops, halter tops, etc.). Straps must be at least 1inch wide.
· Not convey advertisements, establishments, or products whose names can be directly or indirectly construed as carrying a double meaning involving, sexual innuendo, alcohol or drug use.
· Not convey messages that express hate, racial slurs, or sexual harassment.
Pants/Shorts/Skirts/Skorts:
· Skirts, shorts and skorts (shorts with a skirt-like overlay), should not be excessively short or too tight. It is expected that skirts/shorts/skorts will cover mid-thigh when sitting down or crossing legs.
· Pants will cover undergarments, (underwear) at all times and not be excessively long as to drag on the floor.
Other:
· No bedroom slippers or pajamas may be worn.
· No "Heelys" or similar, wheeled shoes.
· No spiked clothing, chains or accessories.
· No mutilated, cutout, or ragged clothing be worn.
· Underwear should not be showing or worn as outerwear.
· No coats, hats, sunglasses in class or hallways.
· All coats, hats, book bags and purses are to be place in the locker before the first class.
Violations:
A student found wearing inappropriate clothing will be asked to change or remove the item, and will be given an opportunity to do so. Should the student not be able to change or remove the item, clothing may be provided by the school, if necessary. Student failure to cooperate will be referred to an administrator. Any student not complying with the decision of the administrator may be considered insubordinate and subject to appropriate administrative action.
Requests for Exceptions:
Requests for exceptions to the dress code for the purpose of school spirit by clubs or organizations are up to the discretion of the school administration.
